With only around 50 year-round residents, Hinterriß it's the only permanent settlement deep in the Karwendelgebirge, surrounded by towering peaks and valleys.
view from Hinterriß near the parkplace; in the background the “Alpenpark Karwendel Museum" visitor center — with exhibits on geology, alpine culture, and old-style hunting lodges.
Follow the forest trail gently climbing through pine woods and alpine meadows.
The trail steepens considerably here. Rocky switchbacks lead up to the Torscharte, a dramatic mountain saddle.
Highlight: panoramic views over the Karwendel Alps.
After crossing the Torscharte, descend into the upper Tortal valley. Wild and remote with part of the alpine experience: solitude, limestone cliffs, and sound of cattle.
You can drive to Hinterriß — but not through it.
The road ends here. It’s a dead-end for cars, which keeps the area peaceful and remote. From here, it’s all about hiking boots and mountain trails.
